Introducing Kitchens: a new podcast series
Hello! It’s been a while! I’m so excited to share the trailer for a new series I’ve been working on over the past year.
Since I started making Lecker in 2016, I started noticing the detail of people’s kitchens a lot more. And it sent me down a whole rabbit hole of why our kitchens look the way they do, why so many of them look so similar, and what it means to have this layout in so many homes.
Wall-mounted cabinets, continuous work surfaces, oven, hob, sink, fridge. Maybe a table, often not. Could this be describing your kitchen? The fitted kitchen is ubiquitous in British homes. But we all have different lives, tastes, needs; we cook different foods. How did we all end up with the same kitchen?
Rooted in the memories and personal stories embedded in people's kitchens, Kitchens combines the history of design and food to understand the current context of how and where we cook. Contemporary academicians such as design historian Professor Deborah Sugg Ryan and legendary kitchen designer Johnny Grey, along with contributors like disability campaigner Katie Pennick and food writer Ruby Tandoh explore the past, present and potential future of the British kitchen. Original theme music was composed for the series by Jeremy Warmsley.
“I was always very aware of the limitations of the kitchens we can end up in. Sometimes by chance, and sometimes by bad luck as well.” – Ruby Tandoh, writer, GBBO runner up 2013, and author of Eat Up
“The kitchen is this amazing space...it’s the place where people experience new technologies and a sense of modernity.” – Prof Deborah Sugg Ryan, academic and resident historian on A House Through Time
The series starts 16th August.
